Srinagar Aug 31: The Directorate of Internal Quality Assurance (DIQA), University of Kashmir (KU), organised a one-day workshop on “Sustainable Development through Green IT Practices” at the Main Campus.

It aimed to discuss the role of information technology in reducing environmental impact and promoting sustainable practices across educational and institutional settings.
Speaking at the inaugural session, Vice-Chancellor KU Prof. Nilofer Khan said, “Sustainable development requires us to rethink the way we use technology and ensure that digital growth is accompanied by environmental responsibility.”
She emphasized the importance of developing sustainable practices within higher educational institutions and encouraged participants to explore practical approaches to reducing the environmental footprint of IT.
Ram Niwas Sharma (IAS), Commissioner/Secretary to the Government, Higher Education Department, J&K, in his remarks, stressed on the need for greater awareness and institutional action towards sustainable use of technology.
Speaking on the occassion Registrar KU Prof. Naseer Iqbal highlighted the importance of adopting green practices in institutional operations and making sustainability an integral part of campus management.
Prof. M. N. Doja, Chairman, Colleges of Vocational Studies, in his keynote address, spoke about the concept of Green IT, its relevance to sustainable development and the need to balance technological advancement with environmental considerations.
Earlier, in his welcome address, Director DIQA KU, Prof. Aijaz Akbar, said that the workshop was aimed at creating awareness about the environmental implications of growing digital infrastructure and encouraging the adoption of energy-efficient, resource-conscious and sustainable IT practices.
The day-long workshop featured expert lectures and interactive academic sessions focusing on Green IT practices, energy-efficient computing, responsible use of digital infrastructure, e-waste management and the role of technology in advancing sustainable development.
The event proceedings were conducted by Deputy Director, DIQA KU, Dr. Manzoor Ahmad, while Waseem Hussain, Assistant Technical Officer, DIQA KU, delivered the vote of thanks.
