KU launches fashion technology course, lab

Srinagar Aug 12: The Directorate of Lifelong Learning & Skill Development (DLLSD), University of Kashmir (KU), today launched a three-month introductory training programme in Fashion Technology at the Main Campus. The programme was inaugurated along with a dedicated Fashion Technology Lab.
The programme has been designed to provide participants with both theoretical knowledge and practical training in fashion technology, with a focus on developing skills relevant to the contemporary fashion and apparel sector. It aims to equip learners with practical competencies that can support employment, entrepreneurship and further professional training in the field.
While addressing the participants of the training programme Vice-Chancellor KU, Prof. Nilofer Khan, said that skill-based programmes can help bridge the gap between academic learning and emerging employment opportunities.
“Skill development becomes meaningful when learners are able to translate their training into practical work and livelihood opportunities. Such courses can help young people develop specialised skills while responding to changing requirements of the employment market,” she said.
Dean Academic Affairs KU, Prof. Shariefuddin Pirzada, and Registrar KU, Prof. Naseer Iqbal, in their remarks, appreciated the initiative and emphasised the importance of expanding skill-oriented programmes alongside conventional academic courses. They said specialised training can provide learners with additional pathways towards financial independence and self-employment.
Speaking on the occassion Prof. Humaira Azim, Director, Institute of Home Science, KU, said the course has been designed keeping the existing skill requirements and employment market in consideration alongwith with hands-on training so that participants can develop practical competence in different aspects of fashion technology.
Earlier, Director, DLLSD KU, Prof. Bashir Ahmad Joo, in his welcome address, provided the objectives of the programme and said the Directorate is working to expand its portfolio of skill-based courses in response to changing learner and employment needs.
The three-month programme includes theoretical sessions and practical training in areas such as fashion designing, garment construction, pattern making, stitching and finishing techniques, along with other components related to the fashion and apparel sector.
The newly inaugurated Fashion Technology Lab will provide participants with a dedicated space for practical instruction and hands-on training as part of the programme.
