
Srinagar, June 30: The Department of Urdu, University of Kashmir (KU), on Monday released Durr-e-Naayaab (The Rare Pearl), a biography authored by Health, Medical Education, Social Welfare and Education Minister Sakeena Itoo, chronicling the life and legacy of veteran leader late Shaheed Wali Mohammad Itoo.
The event, held at the University’s main campus, was presided over by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nilofer Khan, while Sakeena Itoo attended as the chief guest and author. Academicians, literary figures, students, scholars and writers participated in the programme.
Addressing the gathering, Sakeena Itoo described the book as a tribute to her late father and one of the most meaningful contributions of her life. She said the biography was the result of years of research, drawing on family archives, personal letters, memories and historical records to document his values, public service and commitment to the people.
She recalled that her mother’s memories and her father’s personal correspondence played a key role in reconstructing significant episodes of his life. The Minister also urged the younger generation to cultivate the habit of reading, saying biographies offer valuable lessons in leadership, sacrifice and public service.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Nilofer Khan congratulated the author, describing Durr-e-Naayaab as a work of lasting literary and historical significance. She said the biography provides a compelling account of Wali Mohammad Itoo’s public life and reflects the ideals of humility, compassion and service that shaped his legacy.
Dean Academic Affairs Prof. Shariefuddin Pirzada, Registrar Prof. Naseer Iqbal, Dean of the School of Arts, Languages and Literature Prof. Aijaz Mohammad Sheikh, and other speakers appreciated the author’s effort in preserving the life and contributions of the late leader.
Earlier, Head of the Department of Urdu, Prof. Irfan Ahmad Malik, welcomed the guests and highlighted the department’s continued commitment to promoting Urdu language and literature through academic and literary initiatives.
The programme concluded with a review of the book and a panel discussion on its literary, historical and socio-political significance.
