Kulgam, July 16: Kulgam Police have arrested a man from Uttar Pradesh in connection with the fatal hit-and-run incident that claimed the life of an 11-year-old girl in the Vessu area of Qazigund earlier this month. The vehicle allegedly involved in the accident has also been traced and seized.
The accident took place on July 10 near KP Colony, Vessu, where an unidentified vehicle reportedly hit the minor before fleeing the spot. The girl was shifted to GMC Anantnag for treatment but later succumbed to her injuries.
Police Station Qazigund registered FIR No. 176/2026 under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and launched an investigation to identify the driver and locate the vehicle.
During the probe, investigators examined CCTV footage, analysed technical evidence and pursued several leads. Their efforts led to the identification of the suspect and the tracing of the vehicle allegedly involved in the accident.
A police team subsequently travelled to Uttar Pradesh and, with the assistance of local police, arrested the accused, identified as Arun Gupta, son of Lalit Ram Gupta, a resident of Behrinbagh in Barabanki district.
Police also seized the vehicle as part of the ongoing investigation. Further investigation into the case is underway.
SSP Kulgam said the arrest highlights that accused persons cannot escape the law by leaving Jammu and Kashmir. He attributed the breakthrough to technical investigation and coordinated efforts by the police team.
The SSP also appealed to motorists to follow traffic rules, drive responsibly and avoid fleeing after accidents, stressing that timely assistance to injured persons can save lives.
