Srinagar, Sep 13: Nearly a year after violent protests in Leh left four people dead and several civilians injured, the Ladakh Administration has announced a compensation package for the victims and affected families.

Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Vinai Kumar Saxena, sanctioned Rs 15 lakh each to the next of kin of the four persons who lost their lives in the incident. An ex-gratia assistance of Rs 3 lakh for persons who sustained major injuries and Rs 1 lakh for those who sustained minor injuries has also been approved.
"The total financial commitment of the UT Administration under the approved compensation measures will be Rs 1.52 crore, comprising Rs 60 lakh for the four deceased, Rs 72 lakh for 24 persons with major injuries and Rs 20 lakh for 20 persons with minor injuries," the office of LG Ladakh said.
The incident, which occurred during large-scale protests in Leh on September 24, 2025, resulted in the loss of four lives, while 43 civilians sustained major or minor injuries. The agitation was centred on demands for statehood for Ladakh and the extension of the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution to the union Territory.
The Administration said Ladakh did not have a general policy prescribing compensation for deaths or injuries arising from incidents of public unrest or rioting. It therefore examined the matter with a view to extending appropriate humanitarian assistance to the affected families and injured persons.
Lieutenant Governor Saxena, after taking over in March this year, accorded priority to the matter and worked towards finalising the compensation package.
The compensation has been described as a measure of support and solidarity with the affected families and individuals.
Saxena expressed his gratitude to Union Home Minister Amit Shah for his "sensitive, humanitarian and guiding approach" and for standing in solidarity with the victims and their families.
"While no compensation amount can replace a life lost or erase the pain endured, the Ladakh Administration firmly stands beside every affected family in their journey towards healing and overcoming their grief," the Lieutenant Governor said.
The announcement comes days after the Leh Apex Body (LAB) and Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) met representatives of the Ministry of Home Affairs in New Delhi on September 9. During the meeting, the MHA also assured the two groups that a compensation package would be provided to those who lost their lives or were injured during the September 2025 agitation.
The LAB and KDA , which are spearheading agitation in Ladakh to demand constitutional rights and democratic governance from the central government, have also sought the immediate withdrawal of all cases registered against persons in connection with the September 2025 incident, saying the cases should not be withdrawn in phases.
