
The grand finale of the 5th Edition of the LG Cup Horse Polo Tournament concluded with immense enthusiasm at the International Polo Ground, Goshan Drass. Despite continuous rainfall, large crowds gathered to celebrate Ladakh’s rich equestrian tradition.
A total of 14 teams, including both men’s and women’s squads from across Ladakh, participated—making this edition one of the most vibrant sporting festivals in the Union Territory.
In the men’s final, Team Ladakh Scouts defended their title by defeating Team D Meadows in a tense penalty shootout. The women’s final saw Team SECMOL emerge victorious against Team Women’s Ladakh, marking a strong representation of women in traditional sports.
In his address, Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh paid tribute to the martyrs of the Kargil War, praising the Youth Services and Sports Department for successfully hosting the event under tough weather conditions.
He emphasized the importance of preserving horse polo as a heritage sport and proposed to advocate for its recognition as the State Sport of Ladakh. He also announced the upcoming Comprehensive Sports Policy for the Union Territory to strengthen grassroots sports and traditional games.
Calling horse polo a reflection of trust, harmony, and cultural pride, the LG urged all government departments and stakeholders to support the preservation of this historic sport.
Trophies and awards were distributed to winning teams, outstanding players, and organizing members.
Mr. Tahir Hussain Zubdavi, Joint Director of Youth Services and Sports, expressed gratitude to Akashvani Kargil and DD Kashir for their live coverage and special programming, with technical support from Team Iliya Productions.
The closing ceremony was graced by dignitaries including CEC LAHDC Kargil Dr. Mohd. Jaffer Akhoon, MP Haji Hanifa Jan, Executive Councillor Kacho Mohd. Feroz, and senior officials from civil and military administrations.
