Srinagar, Sept 23: Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Wednesday paid rich tributes to Maharaja Hari Singh on the occasion of his birth anniversary, recalling his contribution to social reforms, public welfare and inclusive development.
In a message posted on X, the Lieutenant Governor described Maharaja Hari Singh as an enlightened statesman and progressive thinker who introduced several far-reaching reforms aimed at improving the welfare and empowerment of the people.
“His ideals of public service, equality and inclusive development continue to guide us all,” LG Sinha said.
The Lieutenant Governor also highlighted the enduring relevance of Maharaja Hari Singh’s vision, particularly his emphasis on social equality, welfare-oriented governance and development for the wider public.
The birth anniversary of Maharaja Hari Singh is observed to commemorate his legacy and contributions to the social and administrative development of Jammu and Kashmir.
The 131st birth anniversary of the last Dogra ruler Maharaja Hari Singh was observed across Jammu and Kashmir with political and social groups holding programmes and paying tributes to the erstwhile ruler.
J&K BJP president and MP Sat Sharma, speaking at a function in Jammu, said the Maharaja held a special place in the history of Jammu and Kashmir and his contribution to the region and its integration with India would be remembered for generations.
"Maharaja Hari Singh gave Jammu and Kashmir a distinct identity and played an important role in its history," Sharma said.
His remarks came a day after NC MLA Abdul Majid Larmi sought restoration of a holiday on the birth anniversary of Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah and said that, if it was not restored, the holiday marking Maharaja Hari Singh's birth anniversary should be withdrawn.South Asians & Diaspora
J&K BJP General Secretary (Organisation) Ashok Koul, who attended a function in Srinagar, said remembering historical personalities was not wrong and described the Maharaja as an important figure in the history of Jammu and Kashmir.
"Maharaja Hari Singh ruled Jammu and Kashmir for 22 years. During his rule, there were significant changes in education, health and infrastructure," Kaul said.
