
Jammu, Mar 7: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Saturday presided over the Lineman Diwas celebration at the Convention Centre Jammu, organised by Jammu Power Development Corporation Limited (JKPDCL), to honour the frontline technical workforce that ensures uninterrupted electricity supply across Jammu and Kashmir.
Addressing the gathering, the Chief Minister called linemen the “actual foot soldiers and indispensable workforce of the power department,” praising their service during emergencies such as the 2025 floods and Operation Sindoor. He emphasised the critical role electricity plays in governance, healthcare, education, and public life, saying, “Behind every switched-on light is a lineman.”
Omar Abdullah stressed safety, directing that all linemen be provided proper equipment and training, with the government aiming for zero casualties during duty. He also proposed introducing cash prizes from next year to further recognise their contribution.
The Chief Minister felicitated linemen with certificates and mementos. Awardees included Milkhi Ram, Ashiq Hussain, Bharat Bhushan, Ram Lal, Suram Chand, Bal Krishan, Ajit Raj, Parvez Ahmed Shah, Kuldeep Raj, Manohar Lal, Bhim Singh, Ajay Singh, Rakesh Kumar, Asgar Ali, Ajay Kumar, Swami Raj, Saifullah Bhat, Sohan Lal, Manjeet Singh, and Mohd Tanveer.
JPDCL Managing Director Gurpal Singh highlighted the challenges linemen face working at heights, in extreme weather, and difficult terrains, while announcing ₹1.5 crore worth of centrally procured safety equipment, including helmets, belts, shoes, and discharge rods for field staff. Financial Commissioner Ashwani Kumar underlined the importance of structured training and skills upgradation to ensure safety and efficiency.
A presentation by Assistant Engineer Sachin Tickoo showcased linemen’s work during the 2025 floods, Operation Sindoor, and the COVID-19 pandemic, underscoring their vital contribution to maintaining electricity supply under challenging conditions.
