Srinagar, April 26: Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Sunday unveiled the ‘Srinagar Khel Sankalp’ document at the conclusion of a three-day Chintan Shivir, outlining a unified national vision to strengthen India’s sports culture through cooperative federalism.
The document emphasises an athlete-centric approach, expansion of sports infrastructure, and grassroots talent identification, while promoting sports as a key driver of economic growth and nation-building.
Highlighting the broader impact of sports, the Sankalp underscores its role in boosting tourism, attracting international events, and stimulating local industries. It also reiterates India’s ambition to host major global sporting events, including the Olympics and World Cups.
Mandaviya chaired the high-level conclave of Ministers of Youth Affairs and Sports from states and Union Territories. The event saw participation from over 15 state sports ministers and prominent sports personalities such as Adille Sumariwalla, Abhinav Bindra, Pullela Gopichand, and Gagan Narang, who shared insights with stakeholders.
The document calls for close coordination between sports federations, states, and the Centre to build a robust sporting ecosystem. “To realise this ambition, sporting federations, associations, states, and the Union must move as one—converging on shared targets and advancing together with an athlete-first approach,” it states.
It envisions India hosting the world’s biggest sporting events to uplift communities and showcase national unity on the global stage. “Sports will not be a footnote but a defining chapter in India’s renaissance,” the document affirms, invoking the motto “Sankalp se Siddhi.”
Recognising India’s diversity as a strength, the Sankalp proposes developing regional sports clusters rooted in local geography, culture, and heritage, alongside mapping infrastructure and identifying talent nationwide.
The document also highlights sport as a powerful tool for socio-economic transformation. “Sports can drive economic growth by boosting tourism, attracting international events, and spurring local industry,” it notes.
Reinforcing the vision of a ‘Viksit Bharat,’ the document stresses that sport plays a vital role in youth empowerment, public health, and social cohesion. “Every child deserves the joy and strength that sport can provide, while fostering unity and community spirit across the nation,” it concludes
