Max temp dips below normal in Kashmir, weather warning issued during next 48 hrs

June 12, 2019 | SRINAGAR

The maximum and minimum temperatures have dipped below normal due to incessant rains since Monday night across Kashmir valley, where a weather warning has been issued during the next 48 hours.
However, there was some respite from chilly weather conditions as bright sunshine greeted people in the valley later in the afternoon.
The incessant intermittent rain coupled with strong winds has damaged fruit crops and vegetables in many areas in Kashmir valley. Meanwhile, unexpected chilly weather conditions are expected to adversely affect the growth of the fruit crops and other vegetables.
A Met department spokesperson told UNI that widespread light to moderate rain and thundershowers would occur during the next 48 hours in Kashmir valley under the influence of a Western Disturbance (WD), which is active in the region. “Under the influence of this WD, thundershowers and lightning with gusty winds with a speed of 40 to 50 km/hrs would occur at isolated places in the valley during the next 48 hours,” he added.
He said the weather will improve from Thursday onwards.
After witnessing below normal night temperature due to incessant rain in the summer capital, Srinagar, people woke up to a chilly and damp Tuesday morning. The rain continued throughout the morning in Srinagar, resulting in further dip in the day temperature. However, bright sunshine greeted the summer capital in the afternoon, resulting in improvement in the maximum temperature though it still settled about 7 degree below normal.
The spokesperson said that light to moderate rain and thundershowers would occur during the next 24 hours in Srinagar, where the maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 20 degree and 14 degree, respectively.
Intermittent incessant rain also lashed world famous ski resort of Gulmarg, about 55 km from here in north Kashmir, since late last night. However, the weather at the ski resort turned pleasant in the afternoon as sun came out from behind the clouds, much to the delights of tourists, including foreigners. Gulmarg was the only place in the valley where the maximum temperature settled slightly above normal.
The maximum temperature at world famous health resort of Pahalgam, about 100 km from here in south Kashmir, also dipped and settled about 9 degree below normal due to incessant intermittent rain since Monday night.
Moderate to heavy rain also lashed other parts of the valley, including Qazigund, gateway to the valley, Kupwara in north Kashmir and tourist resort of Kokernag.
