
The Meteorological department Kashmir on Wednesday forecast heavy rains across Jammu and Kashmir, possibly triggering flash floods, landslides, and shooting stones at vulnerable places over the next eight days, from July 16 to 23.
As per the forecast, Jammu and Kashmir is expected to receive intermittent spells of light to moderate rain and thundershower at many places with intense showers at few places on July 18 to 20.
“On July 18 to 20, there will be spells of light to moderate rain/thundershower at scattered to fairly widespread places. On 21 to 23 July, weather is predicted to remain generally cloudy with intermittent spells of light to moderate rain/thundershower at many places with intense showers at few places with heavy to very heavy rain at isolated places of J&K,” an MeT official said.
The MeT in its advisory cautioned people that possibility of intense showers in J&K during 16-17 & 21-23rd July could trigger flash floods, landslides/mudslides & shooting stones at few vulnerable places.
J&K has been receiving intermittent rainfall from the last two days, providing much-needed relief from the recent heatwave that had gripped both Kashmir and Jammu divisions.
In the Valley, south Kashmir districts witnessed relatively higher rainfall with Kulgam receiving 19.2 mm, followed closely by Pahalgam at 16.6 mm.
Gulmarg recorded 17.2 mm, Awantipora 14 mm, and both Tangmarg and Nowgam Handwara around 14 mm.
Srinagar city received 6.3 mm of rain, Pulwama and Kupwara received 8 mm and 7 mm respectively, and Sopore, Bandipora, and Shopian reported lighter precipitation.
In the Jammu region, the highest rainfall was recorded in Udhampur at 46 mm, followed by Katra with 37.8 mm, Reasi with 27 mm, and Rajouri at 23 mm.
Jammu city reported rainfall amounts of 17.9 mm while Poonch received 14 mm, Banihal, Batote, and Ramban recorded rainfall between 5 to 7 mm.
