
Minister for Health, Education, and Social Welfare, Sakeena Itoo, today attended the Platinum Jubilee celebrations of Shaheed Himayun Muzamil Memorial Government Degree College (GDC) Anantnag, marking 75 years of academic excellence and service to higher education in South Kashmir.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including MLAs from various constituencies, Additional Chief Secretary for Higher Education, Shantmanu, Director of Colleges, Prof. Sheikh Aijaz, and Principal of the college, Prof. Mushtaq Ahmad Malik, along with alumni, faculty, and students.
In her address, Minister Sakeena Itoo praised the college for its significant role in nurturing talent, fostering critical thinking, and contributing to the socio-economic growth of the region. She said, “The Platinum Jubilee is not just a celebration of the past but a reaffirmation of our commitment to building a progressive, knowledge-driven society.”
She also highlighted the government's efforts to improve the higher education sector, particularly in rural and far-flung areas, with over 140 new Assistant Professors posted in peripheral colleges. She added that there has been a 12% increase in student enrollment across government colleges in the past year, reflecting the government's commitment to enhancing education standards.
In her speech, Sakeena Itoo noted the construction of new hostel accommodations to benefit students from remote areas and low-income backgrounds, ensuring they have access to quality education. She further lauded the college for producing notable personalities who have contributed significantly to society.
During the event, the Minister inaugurated the new Science Block, equipped with modern labs and smart classrooms, and a new Badminton Hall. She also emphasized the importance of sports and student welfare facilities, creating a well-rounded educational environment.
The Minister interacted with students and faculty, encouraging them to adopt innovative teaching methods and pursue research. She presented awards to outstanding students in academics, sports, and other fields. A documentary showcasing the 75-year journey of the college was also screened during the event.
