Srinagar, August 4: Jammu and Kashmir has recorded more than 35 cloudburst incidents so far this year, claiming around 31 lives and causing widespread damage to residential houses, roads, bridges and other public infrastructure across the Union Territory.

Official figures indicate that at least 22 cloudbursts occurred between June 1 and mid-July. However, continued spells of heavy rainfall in the second half of July and early August resulted in several additional incidents, taking the overall number beyond 35.

The deaths have primarily been linked to cloudbursts, flash floods and landslides triggered by intense rainfall, with the Jammu division reporting the highest number of fatalities.

Poonch, Rajouri, Kathua, Doda and Kishtwar are among the worst-hit districts, witnessing repeated weather-related disasters that have resulted in considerable loss of life and property. In the Kashmir Valley, areas including Shopian and Kupwara have also experienced multiple cloudbursts and flash floods in recent weeks, affecting daily life and damaging vital infrastructure.

The repeated extreme weather events have damaged homes, roads, bridges, agricultural land and other public facilities, while also disrupting connectivity to several remote and vulnerable areas.

The latest spell of intense rainfall has once again underscored the vulnerability of mountainous regions to extreme weather events. Authorities continue to carry out rescue, relief and restoration efforts in various affected districts.

Disaster management officials have urged residents living in flood-prone and landslide-sensitive areas to remain vigilant and follow official weather advisories as the monsoon season continues to affect the region.
