SMC plans revival of 23 springs for climate resilient solutions

March 10, 2024 | BK News Service

The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has taken a proactive step towards environmental sustainability and climate resilience by shortlisting 23 springs within its municipal limits for rejuvenation this year. With a commitment to this cause, the SMC has allocated Rs. 2 crore under the National Clean Air Program (NCAP) to fund the revival efforts.
Recognizing the importance of spring rejuvenation beyond mere water supply, the SMC aims to harness these initiatives as climate-resilient solutions for both livelihoods and ecosystems, particularly in mountainous regions.
Springs not only provide essential water resources but also support biodiversity and enhance the resilience of local communities to climate change impacts.
Commissioner of SMC emphasizes the significance of community participation in the revival of these springs, acknowledging the potential benefits that extend beyond water access. Engaging communities in spring revival efforts not only fosters a sense of ownership but also contributes to achieving one or more of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
This initiative aligns with the broader vision of promoting sustainable development and environmental conservation in the region. By revitalizing these natural water sources, the SMC aims to mitigate the adverse effects of climate change, promote biodiversity conservation, and enhance the overall quality of life for residents.
As the SMC continues to prioritize environmental sustainability and community engagement, the revival of these springs signifies a significant step towards building a more resilient and environmentally conscious city in Srinagar.
With concerted efforts and collaboration, these initiatives have the potential to create lasting positive impacts on both human well-being and ecological health.
