Srinagar, March 17: A Navy Marine Commando (MARCOS) sustained critical injuries after falling into the Jhelum River during a search operation in north Kashmir's Baramulla district on Tuesday.

The injured commando was part of a joint team comprising Navy personnel, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) Baramulla and J&K police that had resumed a search operation at Chandanwari Boniyar.
A middle-aged woman identified as a resident of Lagama Uri, jumped into the river from a wooden footbridge at Chandanwari in Uri. The incident prompted an immediate search operation by teams of SDRF Baramulla and Civil Defence Unit, Uri.
Officials said the team of Marcos was conducting searches to trace the body of a woman who had reportedly jumped into the river on March 13 when the incident occurred.
During the rescue operation, the Navy Marine Commando slipped and fell into the river, suffering critical injuries. He was immediately rescued and shifted to Army Hospital for initial treatment, officials said.
Given his serious condition, the MARCOS commando identified as A S Badoria was later referred to Government Medical College (GMC) Baramulla.
