NC to raise statehood issue in Delhi

June 04, 2026 | Shugufta Rashid

Srinagar, June 3: Stepping up its political campaign, the National Conference (NC) has announced a major protest in the national capital during Parliament’s upcoming Monsoon Session to demand the immediate restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood.

The decision was finalized at the party’s Legislature Party meeting, chaired by senior leaders. Addressing the media afterward, MLA Zadibal Tanvir Sadiq made it clear that symbolic gestures would no longer suffice and that a sustained, high-decibel push is now necessary.
“We will take our fight to Delhi. A protest will be staged during the Monsoon Session to remind the central government that the people of J&K cannot be denied their rightful political status,” Sadiq said.
Beyond the demand for statehood, the meeting also resolved to seek concrete constitutional guarantees to protect the region’s unique identity and interests. Sadiq emphasized that restoration without safeguards would be incomplete.
The Legislature Party also devoted substantial time to two critical public crises. First, the alarming rise in substance abuse, particularly among youth, which Sadiq described as a “silent epidemic” requiring urgent intervention. Second, the leaders stressed the need for balanced regional development, arguing that growth has remained uneven across districts and that all areas deserve equal attention.
“Our protest will be peaceful but unwavering. Statehood is not a favour-it is a settled promise,” Sadiq added, vowing that the NC would keep the pressure on until the goal is achieved.
