New Director at SKIMS

January 13, 2022 |

It was a New Year gift for SKIMS Soura to have someone at the helm who is an insider and knows the premier tertiary care hospital more than anyone else. Dr Parvaiz Ahmad Koul as Director has tremendous responsibility to deliver at a time when Omicron is raising its ugly head in Kashmir and above all being an influenza expert and someone who has conducted research in Infectious Diseases and Pulmonology in India, Dr Koul’s expertise is vital in shaping course for the UT administration to curb this variant at the outset. Infact, his first direct message was through a video clip about the importance of vaccination in such a pandemic. His primary role at this crucial and critical juncture should be to lead from the front in preventing the surge of Covid-19. The other administrative issues within SKIMS could be delved later when the spike subsides. The foremost focus should be on the safety of his faculty and staff who are the vanguards in defending health frontiers of the Union Territory as displayed and delivered by them at time of medical crisis. Shockingly, last year they were denied free vaccination for Swine Flu for reasons better known to his predecessor. Dr Koul should see to it that the institute is fully equipped with enough medical supplies and protection gears, antiviral agents or other life saving devices which are necessary in the present scenario. There should be enough logistic support to the influenza laboratory. He has to deliver on the presentation he made before the three-member selection committee in which he showed them his vision about patient care, research and teaching at various levels. He is aware about the legacy of his institution and the areas which require attention like Ischemic Heart Disease, Road Accidents, COPD, Respiratory Infection and Strokes. These areas need expansion of specialized care and state-of-art facilities to cater to these issues. There has to be meaningful research into these areas. His predecessors gave less importance to research as for them it was patient care which was to be addressed at the cost of vital scientific probe projects but he should significantly seek cooperation and collaboration from reputed medical institutions in the country and abroad as well. With massive changes being implemented in the healthcare sector of UT as medical colleges and district hospitals are coming up to cater to the needs of primary and secondary needs, SKIMS should come up as tertiary institute in real terms and avoid basic hospitalization for simple health issues so that its faculty is utilized to deliver high quality patient care.
