A major boost to sports infrastructure in North Kashmir is on the horizon as the construction of a modern football turf ground at Azadgunj, Baramulla, is nearing completion. The project, funded by the Jammu & Kashmir Sports Council at a cost of ₹5.9 crore, has reached 95% completion and is expected to be fully ready within the next 2–3 weeks.
Deputy Commissioner Baramulla, Minga Sherpa, confirmed the update in a statement to Daily Brighter Kashmir, expressing optimism about the facility’s timely inauguration. “The remaining work is progressing swiftly, and once completed, the turf will be open for football lovers to enjoy and host matches,” he said.
The upcoming facility is expected to significantly enhance local sports engagement, offering young athletes a professional-grade platform to train and compete. The turf is being developed to meet FIFA standards, aligning with the region’s broader vision of promoting sports tourism and nurturing talent.
In addition to the football ground, Minga Sherpa also revealed that 2–3 potential sites have been identified for the construction of a hockey turf. “Once the location is finalized in consultation with stakeholders, construction work will commence,” he added.
The initiative is part of a larger push by the J&K administration to revitalize sports infrastructure across the Union Territory, aiming to empower youth and foster a vibrant sporting culture.
