Nowgam residents struggle with power outages

March 05, 2026 | Mohmmad Daanish

Nowgam, Mar 4: Residents of Nowgam are facing significant hardships as frequent power outages disrupt daily life during the holy month of Ramadan, particularly during Iftar and Sahri.

Local residents reported that electricity cuts lasting several hours have affected households, making it difficult to prepare meals on time for breaking fast and early morning Sahri. “We often have to cook on gas or use flashlights, which is stressful during fasting hours,” said Farah Bhat, a local housewife.
Shopkeepers and food vendors also expressed concerns over the outages. “Our refrigerators and freezers keep shutting down, which affects perishable food and disrupts business,” said Asif Lone, a local fruit seller.
Officials from the electricity department acknowledged the complaints but cited technical glitches and ongoing maintenance work as reasons for the power interruptions. They assured residents that crews are working to restore supply and minimize disruptions during Ramadan.
Residents urged authorities to prioritize uninterrupted electricity during fasting hours, emphasizing that stable power supply is essential for cooking, lighting, and overall daily activities during the holy month.
The outages have sparked local calls for better infrastructure and timely maintenance to ensure that essential services remain unaffected during religious observances.
