‘If it had rained for another day or two, we would have faced lot of difficulty’
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Thursday said he will sit with officials to assess what measures were taken after the devastating 2014 floods, cautioning that even two days of heavy rainfall had brought the Valley close to a major crisis.
“Allah saved us this time. If it had rained for another day or two, we would have faced a lot of difficulty. The water has started to recede now, though it takes more time here than in Jammu. But we have come out of this danger,” Omar told reporters in Srinagar.
The CM said the situation in the last three to four days highlighted the need for a serious review of post-2014 flood management works.
“I will sit with the officers and understand what we did after 2014. If this is the situation after two days of rain, then God forbid, if it rains for four days tomorrow, we could face what we faced in 2014,” he said, recalling that the Valley that time faced floods when it rained for over a week.
Omar said after few days he will meet officers to find out where was the money used after 2014 floods
“Will also try to find out how much was the carrying capacity increased in the flood channel? How much did we succeed in increasing the carrying capacity of Jhelum by dredging? Where there were shortcomings, we will have to fix them, because we cannot live like this every year,” the CM said.
