Omicron in Kashmir

January 12, 2022 |

Finally, the most infectious variant of Covid-19, Omicron, established its footprints in Kashmir on Tuesday, January 10,  2022 as almost 10 cases were detected for the first time. In Jammu, there were three cases earlier which were due to those who had travel history. Among those found to have this variant are non-local travelers whose samples were taken in Anantnag. Among those in Kashmir, Shopian man and Uri woman had this variant and are stated to be recuperating after medication. Astoundingly, the contacts of those infected have not been traced till date. The bright side of this virus is that the infection is not as deadly as Delta and after sometime the patient recovers but the spread is faster and massive. Going by the research and analysis of this variant in the US and the rest of the world, Omicron is unstoppable and eventually everyone will be infected with it. Thankfully, Covid is not a frightening disease anymore as the new strain is milder and is leading to much less hospitalization. Now Omicron as scientific evidence suggests it would be dealt with proper medication to full recovery. A majority will not know whether they have been infected. Probably more than 80 per cent will not even know when they had it. There are reports that no medical bodies have suggested booster doses as it won't stop the natural progression of the epidemic. The testing of asymptomatic close contacts of Covid patients won’t yield results as the virus doubles infection in just two days, so even before the test detects its presence, the infected person has already spread it to a large number of people. It is not something that will make any difference in the evolution of the epidemic. Besides, the virulent progression, the lockdown in present circumstances is not favourable as stricter one would lead to economic disaster and there is no need to put the population locked in their houses as Omicron is much milder compared to the Delta variant. The health authorities in Jammu and Kashmir are fully prepared to deal with this virus as displayed by their efforts in giving jabs to everyone. The only concern is that medicines and medicos should be available if the spread surges. The administration should focus on masks as the best first line of defence in checking the spike.
