Srinagar, April 22: A year after the Pahalgam terror attack at Baisaran meadow that claimed 25 lives, the story of Syed Adil Hussain Shah, a pony rider who sacrificed his life while trying to stop a terrorist, continues to stand out as a symbol of courage and humanity.
During the April 22, 2025 attack, when three terrorists opened fire on tourists in the scenic meadow, Shah reportedly attempted to snatch a terrorist’s rifle to protect a tourist he was carrying and to help others escape. He was shot dead in the process.
His father, Syed Haider Shah, said his son acted purely out of humanity. “Adil did not see religion or caste. He saw only human beings and tried to save them. No matter what support we receive, he will not return, and our pain remains,” he said.
Following the tragedy, the family received financial assistance, a house, and government support, including a permanent job for Shah’s wife. His younger brother was also given employment, while other rehabilitation measures were extended to the family.
Remembering him, his father described Adil as the backbone of the household, known for his cheerful nature and responsibility towards his family.
The attack had triggered a major counter-terror operation, with security agencies identifying the perpetrators through coordinated intelligence inputs. Tourism in the region had suffered a setback but gradually recovered months later as enhanced security measures were introduced, including a QR code-based verification system for all tourism service providers.
Officials said the system was designed to ensure tourist safety by verifying registered guides, pony operators, and vendors across key destinations in Kashmir.
