Pahalgam, April 21: A memorial has been erected in the hill resort of Pahalgam as a tribute to the 25 tourists and a local ponywalla killed in the terror attack last year, as authorities have tightened security across Kashmir ahead of the first anniversary.
The April 22, 2025 attack dealt a major blow to the region’s tourism sector, though the industry has since shown signs of recovery. A black marble memorial bearing the names of 26 victims has been built along the Lidder river, near the Baisaran valley meadow where the attack took place.
Following the incident, all three terrorists involved were later killed in an encounter in the Srinagar hills. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) continued its probe and filed a chargesheet in December against seven accused, including Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), its proxy The Resistance Front (TRF), and a cross-border handler.
The attack had triggered rare large-scale public protests across Kashmir, with citizens condemning the violence. The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly also passed a unanimous resolution expressing grief and vowing to defeat attempts to disturb peace and communal harmony.
A year later, Pahalgam continues to attract tourists, many of whom say they feel safe and welcomed. Visitors from across India described positive experiences, highlighting improved security arrangements and local hospitality.
Authorities have deployed additional police and paramilitary forces in the area, with intensified checks and surveillance at key points. A QR code-based system has also been introduced for all tourism service providers, including pony operators, guides, and vendors, allowing real-time verification of credentials.
Inspector General of Police Kashmir VK Birdi recently reviewed security arrangements with multiple agencies, directing strengthened vigilance around high-footfall and sensitive locations.
Officials said all measures have been put in place to ensure a secure and peaceful atmosphere as Kashmir marks the anniversary of the attack.
