Srinagar, Jan 26: Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Kumar Choudhary on Monday said the morale of the country’s security forces remains strong despite challenges and asserted that their responsibility has increased, particularly in tackling the drug menace and protecting the youth from addiction.
Addressing the 77th Republic Day function at Bakshi Stadium here, Choudhary paid tributes to the Army, police and other security forces, saying their sacrifices allow citizens to live in peace.
He said Pakistan had caused “immense suffering” to Jammu and Kashmir and had repeatedly attempted to disrupt peace and harm tourism in the region.
“Pakistan tried to damage Kashmir and its tourism. Our people and security forces will never allow these attempts to succeed,” he said.
Referring to past conflicts, Choudhary said Jammu and Kashmir had endured difficult phases but had now moved forward on the path of development. He said the prevailing situation in the Union Territory was peaceful and appealed to tourists from across the country and abroad to visit Kashmir.
“The valleys of Kashmir are ready to welcome tourists. Visitors will find a home-like environment here,” he said.
The DyCM highlighted the historical importance of January 26, recalling that the Constitution came into force on this day in 1950, establishing India as a sovereign, socialist, secular and democratic republic.
He also referred to the freedom struggle and the resolution for complete independence adopted in 1930.
The Deputy Chief Minister stressed the role of youth in nation-building and expressed concern over drug addiction among sections of young people.
He said the government was taking steps to address the issue through various initiatives.
He cited programmes such as Mission Youth, digital empowerment platforms, skill development courses, and entrepreneurship support systems, including online learning tools and e-courses. Choudhary said the government aims to transform Jammu and Kashmir into a skill hub of north India by 2030.
He said efforts were underway to strengthen industrial development, with new industrial estates and factories being set up in several districts. The government, he added, was working on a local employment policy to ensure job opportunities for youth.
