Pakistan shelling severely impacts border tourism in J&K

May 19, 2025 | Ayaan Wani

Recent cross-border shelling by Pakistan has cast a shadow over the once-thriving border tourism industry in Jammu and Kashmir. Areas that previously attracted visitors for their scenic landscapes, cultural richness, and unique military tourism experiences are now witnessing a sharp decline in tourist footfall.
Safety concerns triggered by the renewed hostilities have deterred both domestic and international travelers. As a result, local businesses—particularly those in hospitality, transport, and handicrafts—are facing severe economic distress.
“Tourism was picking up steadily, especially in places like Suchetgarh and other border villages, but this fresh wave of shelling has sent everything into a standstill,” said a local tour operator.
Authorities have acknowledged the downturn and are actively assessing the situation. Discussions are underway to implement enhanced security measures and confidence-building initiatives to restore normalcy and revive tourist activity in the region.
The situation remains tense, but stakeholders remain hopeful that with sustained efforts and improved safety, the region’s border tourism can recover.
Authorities are currently monitoring the situation and are expected to implement additional security protocols to ensure the safety of civilians and restore confidence among tourists.
