
Srinagar, July 3: The Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly's Committee on Environment on Thursday visited the Achan Waste Management Site in Srinagar to review the functioning of the city's primary solid waste processing facility and assess measures being taken to strengthen environmental management.
The delegation was led by Committee Chairman M.Y. Tarigami and included Commissioner/Secretary, Housing and Urban Development Department, Mandeep Kaur; Srinagar Municipal Commissioner Faz Lul Haseeb; the Chairman of the J&K Pollution Control Committee; Vice-Chairman of the J&K Lakes Conservation and Management Authority (LCMA); the Chief Engineer, Urban Environmental Engineering Department (UEED); Joint Commissioners of the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC); and other senior officials.
During the visit, the committee inspected the waste management facility and reviewed ongoing solid waste processing operations, legacy waste remediation, leachate treatment systems, environmental safeguards and overall operational efficiency.
The members also assessed initiatives aimed at improving scientific waste processing, enhancing environmental compliance, strengthening sanitation standards and ensuring sustainable waste disposal in line with prescribed environmental norms.
Briefing the committee, SMC Commissioner Faz Lul Haseeb highlighted the Corporation's efforts to modernise municipal solid waste management across Srinagar. He informed the members about initiatives to improve door-to-door waste collection, promote segregation at source, expand scientific waste processing capacity and upgrade waste management infrastructure.
The Commissioner said the Corporation is committed to adopting modern technologies and global best practices to transform the Achan Waste Management Site into an environmentally compliant and sustainable facility while safeguarding public health and maintaining high standards of urban sanitation.
The committee appreciated the initiatives undertaken by the Srinagar Municipal Corporation and stressed the need for stronger inter-departmental coordination, continuous monitoring, infrastructure augmentation, scientific management of legacy waste and wider adoption of advanced waste processing technologies.
The visit underscored the government's commitment to strengthening environmental governance, promoting scientific solid waste management and building a cleaner, greener and more sustainable Srinagar.
