In a bid to prevent students from assembling in Srinagar, authorities on Sunday kept all major parks in the city centre out of bounds for the public.
Pratap Park and Sher-e-Kashmir Park in Srinagar, along with parks located along the Srinagar bund, remained closed throughout the day. Police and Central Reserve Police Force personnel were deployed both inside and outside these parks, while visitors were stopped from entering the premises.
Officials maintained strict vigil in and around the city centre, effectively blocking potential congregation points that are traditionally used for public gatherings and protests. Commuters and locals passing through the area reported heightened security presence and barricading near park entrances.
The restrictions came in the backdrop of a call by open merit students for a march in Srinagar to press for their demands related to reservation. The proposed march was expected to witness participation from political leaders, including Member of Parliament Ruhullah Mehdi and leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party.
Authorities, however, moved preemptively to ensure that no assembly took place in the city centre.
