Persistent traffic jams pester commuters

April 13, 2024 | BK News Service

The festive spirit of Eid in Srinagar has been notably dampened by severe traffic congestion, continuing to vex commuters across the city today as well. Major thoroughfares and key junctions remain clogged, leading to significant delays and disruptions in daily commutes.
The traffic snarls, which began during the Eid celebrations, have extended into the subsequent workdays, causing considerable inconvenience for residents and visitors alike. Areas around popular shopping centers, mosques, and recreational spots have been particularly affected.
Local residents have attributed the congestion to a combination of high festive footfall and ongoing road construction projects, which have temporarily reduced the available driving space.
Moreover, the increase in private vehicles on the road during the holiday season has compounded the issue, straining the capacity of existing infrastructure. In response, traffic police are being deployed in larger numbers to manage intersections and guide vehicular movement more efficiently.
Residents have expressed their frustration, urging for more effective traffic management and infrastructure upgrades. "It takes me over an hour to cover what is normally a 20-minute journey," complained a local commuter, echoing a sentiment prevalent among many in the city.
The ongoing situation highlights the growing pains of an expanding city and the need for improved urban planning and public infrastructure to keep pace with its development.
