A high-level delegation from the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PHDCCI), Kashmir Chapter, today held a productive meeting with Mr, Mussarat-ul-Islam, JKAS , Director of Handloom and Handicrafts, Kashmir, to discuss key initiatives for the revitalization and promotion of the region's esteemed handicraft sector.
The delegation was led by Mr. Vicky Shaw Chair PHDCCI Kashmir and comprised prominent members including Mr. Sajad Shah, Mr. Shahid Khan, and Deputy Director Mr. Iqbal Fayaz Jan.
The meeting served as a significant platform to address several critical areas for the growth and sustainability of the handicraft industry. A primary point of discussion was the recent notification by the GST Council, which has brought numerous handicraft items under a favorable 5% GST slab. The delegation and the Director acknowledged this as a positive step towards enhancing the competitiveness of Kashmiri handicrafts in the national and international markets.
Ensuring the social recognition and welfare of the artisans, the backbone of this heritage industry, was a key focus. The PHDCCI members emphasized the need for concerted efforts to elevate the status of artisans and ensure their work receives the acclaim it deserves.
In a significant move towards skill development, the Chamber offered to provide free infrastructure for the upskilling of walnut wood carving artisans. This initiative aims to preserve this traditional art form while equipping artisans with modern techniques to improve quality and productivity.
The discussion also ventured into modernizing the sector's appeal. Both parties explored the imperative of introducing aesthetic and modern packaging to enhance product value and marketability. A pivotal strategy was outlined to make Generation Z aware of and connected with Kashmir's indigenous art and craft, ensuring the legacy is carried forward to the younger demographic.
Further, the detailed onboarding of all handicraft items, with a specific focus on walnut wood furniture, onto the Government e-Marketplace (GeM) portal was discussed. This initiative is expected to open vast procurement opportunities for artisans and sellers with various government departments and PSUs across India.
Mussarat-ul-Islam, provided a patient hearing and assured the delegation of his department's full support and assistance. He also gave a positive assurance that the Jammu & Kashmir Tourist Trade Act will soon be revised. The revised act will incorporate proper provisions and frame penalties to safeguard authentic handicraft items, protecting both artisans and consumers from malpractices.
The meeting concluded on a highly optimistic note, with a mutual commitment to work collaboratively for the holistic development of the handicraft sector, ensuring it remains a vibrant and sustainable source of livelihood and a proud emblem of Kashmiri culture
