There is much closeness between India and Mauritius due to cultural and religious affinity and this closeness has been strengthened by political initiatives and bilateral ties between the two nations right from India’s independence journey .Indian and Mauritius inked many agreements from time to time to foster goodwill ,friendship and political and economic ties and the two countries are close friends which benefits both countries.PM Modi arrived in Port Louis ,Mauritius on Tuesday -11 February 2025 where he was accorded a ceremonial welcome. Mauritius prime minister Navin Ramgoolam personally received him at the airport ,reflecting the strong ties between the two nations. Members of the Indian community gathered at the airport to catch a glimpse of the Indian leader.

Modi commenced his two-day state visit to Mauritius with a ceremonial welcome in Port Louis on Tuesday. Modi began his visit to the island nation with sapling planting ceremony at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgloom Botanical ,alongside his Mauritius counterpart Navinchandra Ramgoolam. Mr Modi paid homage at concrete ‘Samadhi’of Sir Seewoosagar Ramgloom ,the founding father of Mauritius and at ‘Samadhi’ of Anrerood jugnauth former president and prime minister of Mauritius .Later he met president of Mauritius Dharam Gokhool and gifted him Gangajal from Mahakumbh. The Indian prime ministers this visit is a reminder that India-Mauritius ties need to remain firm in today’s uncertain world. Mauritius has a new government in power led by Navinchandra Ramgoolam of the Labour Party ,whose coalition won a landslide victory in the elections held in November 2024.While India-Mauritius relations continue to be positive and stable ,the visit provides an opportunity to Mr.Modi to establish a personal connect with Mr. Ramgoolam and reassure him of India’s continuing support to the islands security and prosperity. There is no doubt that Ramgoolam will prove to be a trusted partner for India and will open new vistas for our cooperation. In a strategic outreach to the new leadership in Mauritius ,PM Modi met newly –elected Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam and president Dharam Gokhool Tuesday as he began his two –day visit to the island nation.
The engagement with the new leadership is important in the context of the Indian governmenmt’s involvement in developing infrastructure in Mauan ritius under the governments led by Anerood and Pravind Jugnauth. Delhi is now making an effort to reach out to new regime led by Ramgoolam. Mauritius has been ruled by the Ramgoolams and Jugnauths ever since the country became independent in 1968.Speaking at an event for the Indian diaspora in Port Louis,which was also attended by Ramgoolam ,Modi underlined India’s role as ‘’trusted ally in combating illegal fishing ,piracy ,and maritime crimes.’ ’As a reliable friend ,India works with Mauritius to protect its national interests and secure the Indian Ocean region.PM said Mauritius is not just a partner country .For us ,Mauritius is a family .He further said,’ ’This bond is deep and strongly rooted in history ,heritage and the human spirit.’’ We are looking forward to making businesses easier to do, less bureaucracy ,less red tape .
Ramgoolam announced the conferment of his country’s highest civilian award ,the Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean ,on Modi. This prestigious accolade marks Modi as the first Indian and only fifth global recipient of the award ,recognizing his contributions to strengthening India-Mauritius relations. During the meeting with president Gokhool ,the two leaders exchanged views on deepening the special and close bilateral ties.’ ’Had a great meeting with His Excellency Mr. Gokhool ,president of Mauritius.

The agreements inked will provide for promoting the use of national currencies for cross boarder transactions ,sharing of maritime data, joint work in combating money laundering and enhancing cooperation in the MSME.PM Modi warped his two day visit to Mauritius and came back home with good memories of his visit.
