Police book six under PSA in Sopore

April 25, 2026 | BK News Service

Srinagar, April 24: Police on Friday booked six individuals under the stringent Public Safety Act (PSA) for their alleged involvement in recent law and order disturbances and vandalism during a student protest in Sopore sub district of Jammu and Kashmir.

The PSA allows for detention without formal charge or trial for up to two years in certain cases.
The individuals booked under the PSA were identified by Police as Umar Akbar Hajam of Seelu; Salman Ahmed Shala of Shalpora; Altaf Ahmed Sheikh of Panzipora, Tarzoo; Mubashir Ahmed Gilkar of Naseerabad; Muzammil Mushtaq Changa of Arampora; and Majid Firdous Dar of Chinkipora—all from different areas of Sopore. All the six were lodged in District Jail Bhadarwah in Jammu region.
The six were detained under PSA after obtaining proper detention warrants from the District Magistrate Baramulla.
Police said these miscreants were actively involved in instigating unrest, indulging in vandalism and attempting to disturb peace during a recent protest by students.
“Their activities posed a serious threat to public order and safety,” police said, adding “more individuals involved in the said incidents are being identified and are under process for similar legal action, including detention under PSA.”
Last week, an intense student protest erupted in Sopore following allegations by a female student of harassment by a senior lecturer. J&K government placed the senior lecturer under suspension. Police later arrested several persons who were allegedly involved in vandalism during the student protest.
Sopore Police reiterated that there is zero tolerance for any unlawful activity that threatens peace and stability in the district.
Police also issued a stern warning that any attempt to exploit sensitive situations or engage in acts that disturb public order will invite strict and immediate action under law.
