Police launch valley-wide crackdown on vehicles without updated documents

December 13, 2025 | Ayaan Wani

Police on Friday launched a massive Valley-wide enforcement drive targeting vehicles plying without mandatory transfer of ownership after sale–purchase.

The drive follows comes in the wake of last month's car bomb blast near Red Fort in Delhi in which 13 persons were killed.
Police across all major districts —Anantnag, Ganderbal, Shopian, Pulwama, Kulgam, Sopore and Awantipora, intensified checking at key junctions, naka points and busy road stretches.
The crackdown focused on vehicles being operated without updated ownership records, vehicles bearing outside-UT registration numbers, and those running without valid documents.
Police said the move aims to plug loopholes that enable misuse of unregistered or untransferred vehicles.
In Sopore, police launched a district-wide campaign against visible traffic violations, seizing and challaning multiple vehicles under the Motor Vehicles Act. Special emphasis was laid on ensuring that the enforcement is "seen and felt on the ground" to instil discipline among road users.
Awantipora Police seized several vehicles found operating without ownership-transfer records or involved in rash driving. Similar action was taken in Anantnag, where teams at multiple checkpoints impounded vehicles lacking proper documents. Police reiterated that non-updated records create both administrative gaps and security vulnerabilities.
In Ganderbal, joint teams of Police and the Motor Vehicles Department conducted dedicated checks on vehicles bearing outside-UT registration. Several vehicles continuing to operate in J&K without the mandatory transfer of ownership were seized, and strict action initiated under the Motor Vehicles Act.
Shopian Police, completed a week-long drive, took legal action against 144 vehicles with registration numbers of other states found plying without mandatory transfer of ownership — one of the highest district-level enforcement figures reported this week.
Similar intensified drives were carried out in Pulwama and Kulgam, where vehicles with improper documentation, ownership lapses or rash-driving were seized on the spot. District police chiefs have instructed field teams to maintain heightened vigilance in the coming days.
Police have urged all vehicle owners to complete transfer of ownership formalities immediately after purchasing a vehicle and ensure that all documents are valid and up to date. The Valley-wide drive, they said, will continue as part of broader efforts to strengthen road safety, improve accountability, and eliminate documentation irregularities that could pose security risks.
