Protests erupted at the Maternity and Child Care Hospital (MCCH) Anantnag following the death of 24-year-old Khushboo Jan after delivery, with family and locals alleging medical negligence. The Jammu and Kashmir government has ordered a formal inquiry into the incident.
Khushboo Jan, wife of Zubair Ahmed Bhat of Pushwara Khanabal, was admitted on Saturday for delivery. She underwent a surgical procedure and was shifted to the ward, but her condition reportedly worsened within hours. The family alleged that she was returned to the operation theatre for a second surgery, including a hysterectomy, and later referred to GMC Anantnag, where she remained on ventilator support and died late Monday night.
Following the protests demanding accountability and intervention from Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha and Health Minister Sakina Itoo, the Health and Medical Education Department issued Government Order No. 750-JK (HME) of 2025. Professor Dr Iffat Hassan Shah, Principal of Government Medical College Srinagar, has been appointed as the Inquiry Officer to examine the circumstances of the death.
The order mandates the Medical Superintendent of MCCH Anantnag to assist the inquiry, which is to submit a detailed report with recommendations within 14 days. Officials stated the probe aims to establish facts and determine responsibility, if any, while the hospital committee continues its internal review.
