Police have ordered a probe into an officer's conduct during a protest over the mysterious deaths of two Gujjar youths in Kulgam, South Kashmir.
The probe will be conducted by the Deputy Inspector General of Police, south Kashmir.
The decomposed bodies of two brothers, who had been missing since February 13 along with a third person, were recovered three days apart from a stream in south Kashmir.
On Sunday, locals held a protest over the mysterious deaths in Kulgam, during which a police officer allegedly misbehaved with the family members of the deceased.
Later a video surfaced on social media showing a police officer kicking a woman protester.
"A video has surfaced on social media regarding a police officer's conduct with the public in Kulgam. We have taken cognisance of yesterday's incident and the allegations regarding the officers conduct. DIG SKR will enquire and submit his findings within 10 days, "Kashmir Police Zone said in a post on X.
Peoples Conference President and legislator Sajad Lone strongly condemned the incident in Kulgam where a police officer was seen kicking female relatives of two deceased youths.
"Images of a police officer kicking the female relatives of two youths who died in Kulgam, is utterly disdainful," MLA Lone stated while adding that "The whole action reeks of contempt within the minds of those who are supposed to protect the masses."
Meanwhile, legislators today raised concerns over the alleged highhandedness of the police toward the family of a Gujjar youth, whose body was recovered from Vaishow Nallah in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district.
As soon as the House convened, lawmakers stood up and demanded an inquiry into the incident.
The body of Showkat Ahmad, son of Mohammad Sadiq Bajad, a resident of Chata Doonda, Rajouri, was recovered on Sunday. Showkat had gone missing last month along with two others.
National Conference legislator Nazir Ahmad Gurezi called for action against the police, a demand echoed by other legislators, including Mehar Ali and Choudhary Akram.
PDP legislator Waheed Parra also raised concern over the mysterious disappearance of Gujjar youth and demanded an inquiry.
