Radicalization and Kashmir Youth

June 03, 2023 | Mir Mohsin

Radicalization had devastating consequences on the lives of Kashmiri youth. The region of Kashmir, which has experienced a long-standing conflict, has become a breeding ground for extremist ideologies and for the recruitment of young individuals into radical groups. Radicalisation often leads to the abandonment of education and career prospects. Young people who become radicalised may drop out of school or college, limiting their chances of acquiring skill and finding stable employment. This can result in long-term economic hardships and hinder their overall personal development. Radicalised youth are be driven towards participating in acts of violence and terrorism. This not only puts their own lives at risk but also threatens the lives of others, perpetuating a cycle of violence and instability in the region. The process of radicalisation involves the manipulation of vulnerable individuals, exploiting their grievances and frustrations. Once indoctrinated, these young people may develop an extremist worldview that promotes hatred, intolerance and violence. This transformation can have severe psychological consequences, leading to a loss of empathy, social alienation and mental health issues and can create divisions within families and communities causing significant strain on relationship with family members and friends who may hold different beliefs. This results in social isolation, broken familial bonds and a sense of abandonment.

Engaging in extremist activities not only lead to legal repercussions including the risk imprisonment, but also further limits their prospects and opportunities upon release. Young people who become radicalised are manipulated and used as pawns by extremist organizations. They may be coerced into carrying out terrorist acts such as becoming suicide bombers, or killing innocent civilians, with no regard for their well-being or future. Kashmir has long been known for its natural beauty and tourism potential. However, the radicalisation issue has significantly affected the tourism industry. The perception of violence and instability discourages tourists from visiting the region, resulting in a decline in Hotel bookings, restaurant visits, and other tourism-related activities. This, in turn, leads to reduced revenue and job losses in the sector creating an atmosphere of uncertainty and instability, which negatively impacts investment and business confidence. Both local and foreign investors are often hesitant to invest in a region plagued by violence and political tensions. This lack of investment hampers the development of industries and infrastructure, limiting the growth potential of youth. Addressing radicalisation requires a comprehensive approach that combines efforts in education, employment, community engagement, mental health support, and counter-narrative campaigns. By providing alternative avenues for personal growth, fostering inclusivity, and promoting peacebuilding initiatives, it is possible to mitigate the influence of radicalisation and help young people rebuild their lives.
