Railways 100-day plan to focus on expediting Kashmir rail projects

April 09, 2024 | Mohammad Danish

The Indian Railways has unveiled an ambitious 100-day plan aimed at transforming the country's railway infrastructure. This comprehensive plan focuses on key initiatives, including the implementation of the Jammu and Kashmir rail connectivity project, introduction of Vande Bharat sleeper trains and development of bullet train projects.
The Jammu and Kashmir rail connectivity project is set to receive significant attention under the 100-day plan, with efforts focused on expediting its implementation to improve transportation infrastructure in the region.
A pivotal project -- Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramula Rail Link (USBRL) would connect Kashmir with the national rail network.
While travel to Katra in Jammu via Indian Railways is feasible, extending the journey by train to Srinagar remains crucial.
With an estimated cost of Rs 37,012 crore, the USBRL initiative aims to bridge this connectivity gap, facilitating seamless travel across the region.
This initiative is expected to enhance connectivity and stimulate economic growth in Jammu and Kashmir.
Another highlight of the 100-day plan is the launch of Vande Bharat sleeper trains, which will offer enhanced comfort and convenience for passengers travelling long distances. Additionally, the plan includes the expansion of bullet train projects, signalling the government's commitment to high-speed rail connectivity across different regions of the country.
The Chennai's Integral Coach Factory (ICF), a subsidiary of Indian Railways, is also putting the finishing touches on the sleeper coaches of Vande Bharat trains.
Unlike their chair-seating counterparts, these trains are designed for long-distance overnight journeys, promising enhanced comfort for passengers embarking on extended trips. The Economic Times reported quoting officials aware of the matter.
On the other hand, the 100-day plan also includes completing the procurement process of other equipment by August 2026, which is required to begin the bullet train trial run.
Thus, the Indian railway's initiative also aligns with the government's increased budgetary allocation for rolling stock production, surpassing Rs 1 lakh crore in the interim budget for 2024-25.
The Vande Bharat trains, currently being used, have chair seating, limiting their use to daytime and shorter routes that are covered in a few hours.
An official said Indian Railways' unveiling of an ambitious 100-day plan reflects its proactive approach towards enhancing railway infrastructure and improving connectivity nationwide. With a focus on key initiatives, the plan aims to usher in a new era of modernization and growth in India's railway sector.
