
Gulmarg gondola cable car service suspended due to bad weather
The Meteorological department on Wednesday forecast more light to moderate rains and snow in Jammu and Kashmir till February 28.
A MeT official said the upper reaches of Jammu and Kashmir received light to moderate rain and snow while heavy snowfall occurred over isolated higher reaches in last 24 hours.
He said the ski resort of Gulmarg received the highest accumulation of 33.0 cm of snow.
Besides Gulmarg, snowfall was also reported from higher reaches of Kupwara, Shopian, and Bandipora, adding to the winter chill in these areas.
The plains including Srinagar received downpour.
Srinagar received 7.8mm of rainfall; Qazigund, Qazigund 12.2mm, Pahalgam 20.8mm, and Kokernag 6.4mm during the past 24 hours.
The MeT official said the weather will likely remain generally cloudy with light to moderate rain & snow at most places with isolated heavy rain & snow over both Kashmir and Jammu divisions till February 28.
The MeT while issuing advisory warned of temporary disruption of surface transportation mainly over Sadhna Pass, Razdan Pass, Sonamarg-Zojila-Gumri Axis, Mughal Road, Sinthan Pass and other major roads of hilly districts of Jammu and Kashmir due to wet weather.
The MeT advised tourists, travelers and transporters to plan their journey accordingly while following advisories being issued from administration and traffic department.
Farmers are advised to suspend irrigation and other farm operations.
“From March 1-2, the weather conditions will likely remain generally cloudy with light rain and snow at isolated to scattered places. While on March 3, there is a possibility of light to moderate rain & snow at many places of Jammu and Kashmir,” the MeT official said.
He said from March 4-6, the weather will remain generally dry.
The official said there will be a significant fall in day temperatures in the coming days.
The bad weather forced authorities to suspend the Gondola Cable Car service at the world famous ski resort of Gulmarg today.
"Due to inclement weather at Kongdoori and Affarwat, the Gondola Services shall remain suspended for the day," the officials said.
Gulmarg Gondola, one of the highest cable car services in the world, remains a key attraction for adventure enthusiasts, nature lovers and tourists across the world.
The Gulmarg Gondola service starts from the elevation of 8,694 ft and ends at Kongdoori at an elevation of 8,694 ft.
