Rajouri wool centre to boost rural economy

Rajouri, April 12: Deputy Commissioner Rajouri Abhishek Sharma today inspected the newly established Wool Collection, Processing & Training Centre at Gujjar Mandi.

The facility has been set up to strengthen the rural economy and support the tribal population associated with sheep rearing.
The centre has been established by the District Sheep Husbandry Office (DSHO) with space provided by the district administration.
During the visit, the Deputy Commissioner was informed that nearly 7 lakh kilograms of wool is produced annually in the district, primarily by the tribal population.
Emphasizing the immense economic potential of the wool sector, the DC stated that scientific handling and proper processing can transform wool into a sustainable source of livelihood for local communities.
Highlighting the interventions being undertaken, the DC said that the district administration, in convergence with JKCIP and Holistic Agriculture Development Programme (HADP), introduced modern solutions to address existing challenges in wool storage and transportation. He informed that vacuum bags are being used for packaging of wool to keep it fresh, reduce its volume, prevent moisture and maintain quality during transit.
He further added that shearing machines shall be provided to improve efficiency and quality of wool collection. "The processed wool will be transported from source to sale points with the involvement of Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), ensuring better value realization and market linkage for the producers," he added.
On the occasion, the Deputy Commissioner interacted with wool producers and beneficiaries hailing from different parts of the district and sought feedback on the initiative. He encouraged them to avail the facilities being created at the centre, while assuring continued support from the administration.

district administration and lauded the proactive initiative taken under the leadership of the Deputy Commissioner.
