Rajya Sabha Battle

October 24, 2025 |

Jammu and Kashmir is set to witness a high-stakes political contest as 88 MLAs will cast their votes on Friday to elect four Rajya Sabha members from the Union Territory. The election, which has drawn sharp attention from political observers, is shaping into a fierce battle between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the National Conference (NC), symbolising the larger struggle for political dominance in J&K’s evolving democratic landscape. The BJP, confident of its numbers, is banking on its disciplined voting bloc and support from a few independent legislators. On the other hand, the NC, backed by its traditional ally the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is trying to consolidate opposition strength against the ruling party. The arithmetic remains tight, with each vote holding critical significance in determining the outcome. Adding to the intrigue is the uncertainty surrounding the participation of certain MLAs. Doda MLA Mehraj Malik, currently under detention, is unlikely to vote, while reports suggest that People’s Conference leader Sajad Lone may abstain. The AIP’s lone legislator remains undecided, further complicating the equation. Such developments have injected unpredictability into an already tense atmosphere, making it difficult to forecast the final numbers with certainty. This Rajya Sabha election is not merely a contest for four Upper House seats—it reflects the shifting contours of J&K politics post-reorganisation. The outcome will be viewed as a referendum on the influence and resilience of regional parties amid the BJP’s expanding political footprint. For the NC and PDP, this election provides an opportunity to reaffirm their relevance and unity, while for the BJP, it serves as a litmus test of its strength in the new political order of the Union Territory. Beyond the arithmetic, the elections highlight the need for restoration of full democratic processes in J&K. The absence or detention of elected representatives raises serious questions about political fairness and representation. As the Union Territory moves toward a new phase of governance, transparency, inclusion, and respect for the people’s mandate must remain the cornerstones of its democratic journey. When the votes are cast and counted, the results will not just decide who goes to the Rajya Sabha—they will also reveal where the political winds of Jammu and Kashmir are truly blowing.
