Awantipora, Sep 22: The Centre for Disaster Risk Reduction (CDRR), Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST), in collaboration with the Dean of Students, organized Geophysical Investigations at Campus-II of the University. The initiative aims to explore strategies to mitigate the impact of flash floods and manage water flow from the Wastoorwan Mountain to the nearby Jhelum River, while enhancing underground water recharge and ensuring sustainable water management.
The event was inaugurated by the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Shakil Ahmad Romshoo, in presence of Registrar Prof. Abdul Wahid, Prof Shakeel Ahmad visiting professor at CDRR, Finance Officer Mr. Sameer Wazir, Ex. Engineer, Ghulam Nabi Bhat, Coordinator CDRR, Dr. Irfan Maqbool Bhat, Coordinator, Dean Students, Deputy Registrars, Deans, and Heads of various departments.
Prof. Romshoo emphasized the importance of devising disaster mitigation strategies and highlighted the significance of geophysical investigation for effective water resource management. Experts from the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), Hyderabad, demonstrated geophysical survey methods to students from the Electrical Engineering Department, providing insights into subsurface geological formations up to 50 meters deep. These findings will aid in planning recharge pits to improve groundwater management.
