Republic Day: Celebrating Unity, Integrity, and Democracy

For me, Republic Day holds greater significance than Independence Day. While many countries have achieved independence, not all have successfully embraced democratic values, as evidenced by our neighboring countries. Despite having a constitution, these countries have faced challenges in establishing a thriving democracy, with instances of constitutional violations and military rule.

26th January and 15th August are historical days that every citizen must know, respect, and celebrate. These days are marked by the history of sacrifice, struggle, and the blood of thousands of people. We are living in the world's largest democracy, governed by protected laws and rules, thanks to the vision, contributions, and dedication of our citizens and leaders who sacrificed every moment to build this nation.

The celebration of National Days in Kashmir is not new. However, during the period from 1990 until the abrogation of Article 370, these days were significantly affected by violence and unrest. The generation of Kashmir that grew up between 1990 and around 2016 did not experience these celebrations due to turmoil, violations, and radicalization.
In recent years, particularly after the restoration of peace and the elimination of violence in Kashmir, youth under the age of 25 have been exposed to numerous positive changes. This new environment has provided them with opportunities for growth and development.
Today, the youth of Kashmir are actively contributing to and safeguarding national sovereignty and integrity by participating in nation-building efforts and proving themselves as valuable contributors to the country. The last decade, especially the period following the abrogation of Article 370, has brought about significant changes among the youth who were once deeply affected by violence and turmoil.
Every year, India celebrates Republic Day, marking the implementation of the Constitution that established India as the world's largest democracy. This day is an opportunity to revisit the past, recall and honour the events, and remember the people whose contributions led to these successes. It is always a moment of pride, as it strengthens our collective identity and shapes how we perceive ourselves as a nation.
As we step into the New Year 2025, the challenges our country faces are immense, yet they also serve as a source of pride. India, being the second most populated country, continues to excel in addressing the challenge of providing for its people across all fronts. Our political leaders, social scientists, economic experts, and scientific leaders play a pivotal role in uniting the nation and driving development across every sector of life.
The true essence of the Republic nature of the Indian nation is often witnessed in Kashmir, where, even during instances of unrest, stone-pelting, and violations, our security forces exercise restraint and prioritize the protection of civilians. Moreover, they go beyond their duty by providing counselling and guidance to Kashmiri youth, helping them avoid violence and radicalization.
Today, National festivals are being celebrated with full zeal and enthusiasm across every corner of the Kashmir. Each year, the circumstances in Kashmir are improving, with peace and prosperity gradually prevailing. It was once hard to believe that those involved in violence, especially the youth, could change, but this transformation is becoming evident with each passing year.
Today’s youth in Kashmir are embracing the national flag with honour and dignity. They proudly display the waving flag as their profile pictures, share patriotic songs, and actively participate in the celebrations. This remarkable change reflects the positive impact that India’s democratic Republic has had on Kashmir.
National Days signify that the entire nation must come together to celebrate. After gaining independence, it was a crucial step to create a constitution for the country. A Constituent Assembly was appointed to draft the Constitution of India. After two years, eleven months, and eighteen days, the Constitution was finally completed. On the 26th of January, 1950, the Constitution was officially adopted and implemented, and this day has since been celebrated as Republic Day.
As a countryman, it is not a holiday but holy day to remember; to send blessing and prayers to all great heroes on which commandment and commendable work they’ve done for the nation. It’s because of them that we are one of the largest democracies of the world today
As usual, Republic Day is celebrated every year on January 26 to commemorate the adoption of the Indian Constitution, which came into effect on this day in 1950. The Constitution is the supreme law of the land and citizens are expected to abide by it. On this day, we remember the freedom fighters' sacrifices and great leaders who strived their life, aiming for a free future for upcoming generations. It is the day on which the world's largest constitution (the Indian constitution) came into force. India became a sovereign democratic republic after its constitution came into effect on 26 January 1950. It was on this day in 1930 when the Indian National Congress proclaimed Purna Swaraj, the declaration of India's independence from colonial rule.
Celebration of victory is always a pride and a proud thing to do, for it satisfy the collective identity and defines the way we look upon ourselves as a nation. For decades Kashmir see it from a different prism under different political ideologies. Baseless and self-oriented ideologies produce hate and aggression against India. This hate and aggression further lead to the destruction of life and property.
Various efforts have contributed to the restoration of peace in Kashmir, and one of the most significant efforts is the abrogation of Articles 370 and 35A. This decision cleared manipulations and misconceptions, helping the people of Kashmir better understand the nation's intent. It not only strengthened India on a national level but also elevated its standing internationally.
This move has unified India under the principles of one nation, one flag, and one constitution. At the core of patriotism lies honesty and dedication to one’s nation. While it’s easy to be a propagandist in an era driven by technological advancements, the real question is how much of what we propagate is practiced in reality. To be able to propagate a national festival is a mere exercise to satisfy the collective consciousness, however, to be able to celebrate and transfer its values is a challenge to undertake.
The people in these countries have endured difficulties in securing basic rights, underscoring the importance of not just gaining independence but also fostering a robust democratic system. This perspective emphasizes the enduring impact of a constitutional framework in ensuring the well-being and rights of the citizens.
Independence is not just about breaking free from colonial rule; it entails the protection, availability, and enjoyment of basic rights. If these rights are compromised after gaining independence, the true essence of freedom is lost. India and Pakistan attained independence from British rule with the aim of liberating their people from ruthless oppression. However, the aftermath in Pakistan has witnessed challenges more detrimental than those faced during the struggle for independence. Therefore, the true success of a country's independence lies not just in breaking free from violence and human rights abuses but also in creating a free and secure environment that ensures the ongoing protection of fundamental rights. This perspective underscores the significance of Republic Day, emphasizing the importance of establishing a robust and enduring framework for safeguarding rights post-independence.
Every person aspires to live a happy and peaceful life, which is the true essence of life itself. Independence becomes the means to escape violence, injustice, and deprivation, allowing individuals to live with honor and dignity, free from external pressures. On the other hand, a republic signifies a life governed by a set of rules designed for the well-being of the people. It aims to maintain social order and safeguard the life, liberty, and dignity of every human being, transcending caste, color, and creed. Additionally, it embodies the provision of equal opportunities and the fulfilment of rights and duties towards the country for all its citizens.
What we should all know about Republic Day is that many gave up their lives and liberty so that we can have this guiding document. We got one of the most wonderful constitutions in the world. I don’t claim it is perfect - because nothing created by humans can be perfect.
In a resounding commemoration of democratic values and national identity, Republic Day stands as a pivotal occasion for nations worldwide, with India's celebration on January 26 holding particular significance.
Republic Day, a testament to the triumph of democratic principles, celebrates the establishment of a government by the people, for the people. It serves as a vibrant expression of national unity and diversity, as various states, cultures, and traditions converge to celebrate the rich tapestry of the nation's identity.
Emphasizing the supremacy of the Constitution and the rule of law, Republic Day reinforces the idea that all citizens, irrespective of their stature, are subject to the same set of laws. The celebrations evoke a sense of patriotism and pride, fostering a collective spirit that resonates with the love for one's country.
Historically significant, Republic Day marks the transformation of a nation into a republic, breaking away from monarchical or colonial legacies. It symbolizes the culmination of a struggle for self-governance and the end of external rule, encapsulating the essence of freedom institutionalized through a constitution.
The occasion provides a unique opportunity for citizens to reflect on the core values and ideals of the nation, encouraging a commitment to upholding the principles embedded in the Constitution. Republic Day serves as an avenue for civic education and awareness, especially among the youth, about the country's governance structure and democratic principles. It symbolizes a commitment to the global community, emphasizing the importance of democratic governance and the protection of fundamental rights.
In essence, Republic Day is more than a national holiday; it is a manifestation of a country's commitment to democratic governance, the rule of law, and the values enshrined in its constitution. Through vibrant celebrations, parades, and events, the day contributes significantly to the overall development and identity of a nation, fostering a deep sense of pride and unity among its citizens.
