Republic Day celebrations spark tourist joy at Lal Chowk

January 27, 2026 | MOHMMAD DAANISH

Srinagar, Jan 26: Kashmir’s 77th Republic Day festivities brought vibrant scenes of joy and patriotism to the Valley, especially at Lal Chowk’s iconic Ghanta Ghar, where locals and tourists alike expressed their enthusiasm for the national celebration. The atmosphere was billed as a striking display of unity and national pride in one of Kashmir’s most historic public spaces.

By midday, Lal Chowk was buzzing with activity as visitors paused to take photos, wave the Tricolour, and soak in the Republic Day spirit. Among them were several tourists from across India who happened to be in Kashmir on holiday and chose to mark the Republic Day celebrations amid the scenic backdrop of the city centre. One memorable moment that captured widespread attention was that of a tourist from Ahmedabad, who painted his body in the colours of the national flag, carried a miniature BrahMos missile model, and waved the Tiranga with chants of “Bharat Mata ki jai”. His palpable pride and spirited participation symbolised the deep resonance of Republic Day even beyond Delhi’s Kartavya Path.
“I extend greetings to everyone on the occasion of Republic Day,” the tourist said, noting his repeated visits to Lal Chowk since 2022 and highlighting the evolution of the region’s atmosphere. He described how hoisting and waving the Tricolour here used to be a challenge, reflecting on how the city’s mood has transformed over recent years.
Local residents, shopkeepers, and visiting families mingled with the tourists, exchanging warm greetings and sharing stories of their own Republic Day experiences. Many remarked on how meaningful it felt to celebrate the day in Kashmir’s heart, where the echoes of history blend with contemporary pride. The festive mood was further accentuated by colourful displays, lively conversations, and a palpable sense of camaraderie among strangers brought together by shared patriotism.
For the visitors, being in Kashmir during Republic Day added a unique layer to their travel experiences — combining the joy of seeing breathtaking landscapes with the honour of celebrating India’s constitutional spirit at a place that once stood as a symbol of political complexity but now resonates with expressions of unity and national identity.
Overall, the celebrations at Lal Chowk highlighted not just the official commemorations but also the evolving spirit of Republic Day in Kashmir — where residents and travelers alike came together to cheer for the nation with genuine enthusiasm and pride.
