Resignation Will Come, But Accountability Must Come First: Ruhullah Writes To Farooq Abdullah

August 28, 2026 | BK NEWS SERVICE

Srinagar, Aug 28: National Conference MP from Srinagar Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi on Friday said he has written to party president Dr Farooq Abdullah in response to his public call for his resignation, asserting that accountability must precede his decision to step down.

In a post on X, Ruhullah said he had responded to the party president's remarks through a letter and was awaiting his response to the questions raised.

In the letter dated August 28, Ruhullah questioned the National Conference's reported shift from its earlier demand for restoration of Article 370 to seeking restoration of statehood.

He argued that treating statehood as the limit of the party's political position would amount to accepting the changes made in August 2019. He also referred to Farooq Abdullah's recent remarks about standing on one's own feet and questioned why similar questions are objected to when raised by him.

Ruhullah further argued that the party's current demand for statehood falls short of its earlier position on the restoration of Articles 370 and 35A, which he said formed part of the political commitment on which the party sought public support.

He also referred to Farooq Abdullah's remarks questioning his position before joining the National Conference. Ruhullah said he came from a long political tradition and was the son of a martyr, adding that Farooq Abdullah had personally invited him to join the party.

Ruhullah said he would await the party president's response to the issues raised in his letter before taking further steps.
