August 31, 2026 | BK NEWS SERVICE

Jammu, Aug 31: A retired Army soldier died after his throat was severely cut by a banned Chinese kite string while he was riding a two-wheeler in the Bishnah area of Jammu Ring Road, officials said.

The deceased was identified as Naib Subedar (Retd) Lakhvinder Singh. He suffered critical injuries after coming into contact with the kite string late Sunday.

Singh was reportedly returning to his home in R S Pura after finishing his work at an industrial unit in Bari Brahmana, where he was employed as a private security guard.

According to officials, the kite string became entangled around his neck while he was travelling through the Bishnah area, causing serious injuries.

He was immediately taken to a hospital for treatment but later succumbed to his injuries.

Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The fatality has renewed concerns over the continued sale and use of banned Chinese kite string, commonly known as Chinese Manja or Chinese Gattu.

Despite restrictions on its sale and use, the material continues to be reported in circulation in some areas. Authorities have previously taken action against traders found selling the banned string.

The latest incident has once again raised questions over enforcement of the ban and the availability of the dangerous kite string in local markets.
