In today’s world of moral decline and social unrest, the need for value-based education is greater than ever. Our society is not only facing an intellectual crisis but a deep moral and ethical one. In such times, the discipline of Islamic Studies carries special importance as it teaches individuals how to live peacefully and responsibly in a secular, pluralistic society.
Islamic Studies is not confined to theology alone. It encompasses diverse fields such as Islamic Civilization, Fiqh (Jurisprudence), Politics, Economics, Finance, and Philosophy. Together, these papers prepare students to understand moral reasoning, human values, justice, and coexistence. The subject nurtures a balanced personality capable of engaging with modern challenges while remaining rooted in ethics and universal values.
Unfortunately, despite its broad relevance, Islamic Studies has not received due attention in our higher education system. There are a large number of doctoral and post-doctoral scholars holding NET, JRF, and SET qualifications, yet opportunities for them remain limited. Disturbingly, the number of contractual Assistant Professors in this discipline at the college level has been further reduced this year. At the 2 level, the subject is almost at the brink of extinction — a loss that will deprive future generations of a moral and cultural foundation.
Ironically, some of the world’s most prestigious universities have long recognized the importance of Islamic Studies. Institutions such as Harvard University, University of Oxford (UK), Yale University (USA), The University of Edinburgh (UK), University of Toronto (Canada), SOAS University of London, International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM), Umm al-Qura University (Makkah), and Al-Azhar University (Cairo) offer advanced programmes in the field. These universities understand that studying of slam academically promotes intercultural understanding, global peace, and social harmony.
It is, therefore, a humble appeal to the Higher Education Department and all those at the helm of academic affairs to give sincere attention to this discipline. Islamic Studies should be fully incorporated into higher education and introduced in all colleges across Jammu and Kashmir. Providing adequate teaching positions and research opportunities will not only uplift the subject but also help in nurturing morally grounded and socially responsible citizens. Reviving Islamic Studies is not only an academic requirement but a moral necessity. Strengthening this subject means nurturing peace, ethics, and understanding — values that our society needs now more than ever.
