Rightfully Umran

May 24, 2022 |

The pace sensation, Umran Malik, finally earned his spot in Team India after proving his mettle in the Indian Premier League where he picked 21 wickets in 13 matches for Sunrisers Hyderabad. The wait for the call was over on Sunday when his services were sought for T20 series against South Africa. What caught the eyes of selectors was his consistency and acumen in bowling at 95 miles per hour which is quite remarkable in contemporary cricket. Umran got praise from all top players and ex-cricketers whose comments not only matter in India but in the rest of the world. Legend Sunil Gavaskar heaped praise on Umran by saying that it isn't just his speed that is impressive but also his accuracy. Gavaskar, the brilliant opener who has seen talent across the country emphasized that a lot of guys who bowl at that speed tend to spray the ball around but Umran bowls very few wide deliveries. For Umran, Gavaskar meant that if he can control the wides down the leg side, he will be a tremendous bowler because that will mean he'll be attacking the stumps all the time, and with his pace, it's not easy to hit straight. If he bowls wicket-to-wicket, he will be pretty much an unplayable bowler. A poor man’s son from the Gujjar Nagar area of Jammu, Abdul Rashid hardly minced word on the achievement of his son but took pride in him to represent the nation and wear national colours. The SRH pacer has been a speedster to the core as he 157 kph in the IPL which is the fastest ball bowled by an Indian. It was Umran’s self-belief that made him work hard and hone his bowling skill. Umran is the second cricketer from Jammu and Kashmir to play for India after Parvez Rasool. While Rasool hailed from Kashmir, Umran is a Jammu lad. Umran’s penchant for the most loved sport, cricket, took over him and his body as he worked hard on it so as to keep up with the pace and speed coupled with accuracy. The 17-year-old walked into the history when he requested to bowl during a local match in Jammu as his pace awestruck all and continues to do so. For him, the call for T20 is not the end but the commencement to keep up the mark and expectations of the nation and well-wishers since the media in Jammu and Kashmir and the rest of the country have been all supportive of his humble background to scale the heights.
