Role of Women in Nation Building

Women from the kitchen to the grassroots contribute towards nation-building

March 12, 2026 | Mymoona Akhter

The role of women in nation-building is simply extraordinary, and their contributions are visible in their homes and also across communities and grassroots levels. While women are building and shaping families within their kitchens, they are also building and shaping the future of their nations through the kind of values they instil in their children and future generations. As they are mothers and teachers to their children and as women within their respective communities, they play a significant role in shaping and building the kind of intellect and mentality of individuals who will eventually shape and build the future of their nations. Women are also building and shaping their nations through their contributions to economic growth, which includes agriculture, education, and their respective professions.
At the grassroots level, women participate in community development, social reform, and local leadership. Their resilience and determination often strengthen families and communities even during social and economic challenges. When women receive education, opportunities, and equal participation in decision-making, they become strong drivers of sustainable development. Their involvement encourages inclusive decision-making and balanced social progress. A nation that recognizes and values the contributions of its women builds a stronger and more equitable future. Therefore, empowering women from the household to the grassroots level is a matter of equality and an important step toward meaningful nation-building.
Nation-building is a continuous process that depends on the participation of every citizen. Among all contributors, women hold a unique and transformative place. From managing households to supporting grassroots initiatives, women shape the social, economic, and moral foundation of a nation. Their contribution often begins within the home but extends far beyond it, influencing communities, economies, and governance structures.
At the most basic level, women contribute to nation-building through the family. A woman in the kitchen or household is not simply performing domestic tasks; she is nurturing future citizens. Mothers are often the first educators of children, shaping their values, discipline, and social awareness. Through early childhood guidance, women influence the moral and intellectual development of the next generation. In many societies, this invisible labour forms the backbone of social stability and national character.
Moreover, education can strengthen women’s participation in national development. Women who are educated can be relied upon to provide education and healthcare to their families. This can have a positive impact on human development. Research has shown that every year of schooling can increase women’s earnings by 11.7 per cent. This shows that investing in women’s education can have positive economic implications. Women who are educated can not only help themselves economically, but they can also help society as a whole.
Women also play a critical role in economic growth. Globally, women represent nearly half of the world’s population but only around 41 per cent of the formal workforce. This highlights both their current contribution and the untapped potential they hold.
The women at the grassroots level are the backbone of development. At the grassroots level, women are the driving force behind development. Women are still actively involved in agriculture, livestock, and small-scale enterprises in rural areas. Women-led self-help groups, women-led enterprises, and women-led activities are powerful approaches to poverty reduction and rural development. This has created a ripple effect, leading to development at the national level.
Women are also increasingly taking part in governance and leadership in local areas. Currently, there are millions of women worldwide in decision-making positions in local governance. On average, women make up 36 per cent of elected members in local government. This ensures that local issues are well addressed, such as health, sanitation, education, and social services. Women in governance are focused on sustainable development to cater to societal needs.
Besides economics and governance, women also play an important role in social change. For instance, women have been at the heart of various social movements that advocate for education, equality, and justice. Through challenging social traditions and embracing positive social values, women play an important role in creating an inclusive and equal society. Their activism has raised awareness on various critical issues such as girls’ education and healthcare.
Despite these achievements, women still experience challenges such as inequality in accessing opportunities, stereotypes, and unpaid care work. Across the globe, there are more than 710 million women who are outside the labour force because they are taking care of families. This is because of the challenges that prevent women from participating in the national building process.
In conclusion, it is safe to say that the involvement of women in nation-building is not limited to common perceptions. From caring for family in the kitchen to actively participating in various programs in grassroots areas, women are instrumental in laying the groundwork of a nation’s development. Their contributions in various areas, such as education, economy, and governance, are a clear indication that a nation’s development is linked to the empowerment of its women. A nation is considered to have prospered when its women are educated and empowered.
