May 30, 2023 | Er Aausyf Ibn Farooq

In the breathtakingly alluring valley of Kashmir, where nature's splendour knows no bounds, lurks a treacherous menace that jeopardizes the health and well-being of countless souls. The consumption of tobacco has spread like wildfire, and it's high time we put our foot down and declare a tobacco-free Kashmir. As wise folks, it's time to say no to smoking because tobacco is as lethal as a viper's bite.

Tobacco in any form is a recipe for disaster when it comes to our health. Puffing on cigarettes, chomping on tobacco, or even inhaling secondhand smoke can bring forth a host of ailments, from lung cancer and heart disease to strokes and respiratory troubles. The harm isn't limited to the person indulging in tobacco; it spreads like wildfire, affecting loved ones and the community at large.
If we want to tackle this relentless demon, we need to start the fight right at home. Parents, listen up! You hold the power to shape your children's habits and create an environment that's free from foul habits like smoking. Set an example by leading a tobacco-free life yourself and watch as your little ones follow in your virtuous footsteps.
Teaching our children about the perils of tobacco should kick off at an early age. It's time to sit them down and have a heart-to-heart, laying bare the ugly truth about smoking and the importance of making healthy choices. By fostering an atmosphere of open dialogue and understanding, parents can empower their young ones to resist the allure of tobacco and make informed decisions for their well-being.
Hold your horses! Here are some effective strategies that parents can implement to create a tobacco-free environment at home:

Education and Awareness

Parents should educate their children about the harmful effects of tobacco consumption. Teach them about the risks associated with smoking and the importance of making informed choices for their health.

Open Communication

Create a safe space for dialogue and encourage your children to share their thoughts and concerns. Listen attentively and address any questions or misconceptions they may have about tobacco.

Lead by Example

Children often mimic the behaviours they observe at home. If parents refrain from smoking and showcase a tobacco-free lifestyle, it reinforces the importance of making healthy choices.

Engage in Alternative Activities

Encourage your children to participate in sports, hobbies, or other activities that promote a healthy lifestyle. By keeping them engaged, you reduce the likelihood of them turning to tobacco as a form of recreation or stress relief.

Monitor Media Influence

Be mindful of the media your children are exposed to, as tobacco advertisements and the glorification of smoking can have a significant impact on their perception of tobacco use. Limit their exposure to such content and provide context when discussing tobacco-related themes.
By implementing these measures, parents can effectively create an environment that discourages tobacco usage and supports a tobacco-free Kashmir. Remember, the battle against tobacco starts at home, and each individual has a responsibility to contribute to a healthier society.
But that's not all, folks! Schools, NGOs and educational institutions need to join the fight too. It's high time they stepped up to the plate and spread awareness about the dangers of tobacco. Incorporating comprehensive anti-tobacco education into the curriculum will arm students with the knowledge and equip them to make wise choices for their health. Let's get those students engaged with discussions, workshops, and awareness campaigns, so we can cultivate a generation that's sharp, savvy, and hell-bent on a tobacco-free future.
Wait, there's more! Our policymakers and the government have a vital role to play in squashing tobacco consumption. It's time to tighten the screws on tobacco advertising, hike those taxes on tobacco products, and enforce strict bans on puffing away in public places. Public health initiatives that offer support and resources for smoking cessation are key to helping individuals kick the habit and lead healthier lives.
Remember, folks, this isn't a battle for the faint of heart. Creating a tobacco-free Kashmir calls for a united front and a shift in our cultural compass. Peer pressure and societal acceptance of smoking have fueled its spread. So let's promote alternative ways to unwind and have fun, like sports and hobbies, to provide healthier outlets for stress relief and enjoyment. By fostering a supportive community that frowns upon tobacco consumption, we can create an environment where individuals are inspired to make healthier choices.
World No Tobacco Day 2023- campaign (Grow Food Not Tobacco)
Every year, the World Health Organization (WHO) observes May 31st as World No Tobacco Day. This is a global initiative to raise awareness about the dangers of tobacco use and encourage people to quit smoking. According to the latest data from WHO 2023, tobacco kills more than 8 million people each year around the world. Moreover, The world is confronted with a global food crisis fueled by conflict, climate change and the COVID-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, tobacco is grown in over 124 countries, taking up millions of hectares of fertile land that could be used to grow food, address food security and nutrition challenges and help feed families. Tobacco growing also has serious health impacts on tobacco farmers due to the heavy use of pesticides and high absorption of nicotine through the skin: WHO
To wrap it up, the consumption of tobacco in Kashmir is a grave concern that demands immediate action. So let's don our thinking caps, folks, and consider ourselves prudent enough to kick the butt and be heroes in a tobacco-free Kashmir. The revolution begins at home, with parents taking charge and creating a tobacco-free environment. Education, both within families and schools, plays a pivotal role in spreading awareness about the perils of tobacco. And let's not forget the role of our fearless policymakers, the government, and the entire community in championing regulations, support systems, and a positive environment for individuals to conquer their tobacco addiction. Together, let's stand tall and strive for a healthier, tobacco-free future for the people of Kashmir.
