In Srinagar the Jhelum gets a lot of wastewater from homes and businesses and smaller towns like Anantnag, Sopore, Baramulla and Pulwama are also polluting rivers because they do not have sewage systems. In Jammu the Tawi is under pressure from urbanization and waste. All this waste reduces the oxygen in the water adds many nutrients and hurts the homes of fish and other aquatic animals. At the time throwing trash and toxic liquids from places like the Achan landfill into rivers is making people sick and hurting biodiversity. It is also very bad that people are taking over the land around rivers. Homes, shops and other buildings are being built on the spaces that rivers need when they flood.
