
Bringing laurels to Kashmir, Prof. Ghulam Jeelani — Dean of the School of Earth and Environmental Sciences and Head of Department of Earth Sciences at the University of Kashmir — has been honoured with the prestigious National Geoscience Award, one of India's highest recognitions for outstanding contributions in the field of geosciences.
The award was presented by President of India, Droupadi Murmu at a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi.
The National Geoscience Award, instituted by the Ministry of Mines, Government of India, represents one of the highest national recognitions for outstanding contribution in the field of geoscience and allied fields.
Prof. Jeelani received the award for his research in isotope hydrology and Himalayan environmental studies, which has significantly advanced the understanding of water resources, glaciers, and climate change impacts in the region.
Prof. Jeelani is widely regarded as one of leading isotope hydrologists of the country.
Over the years, his work has shed new light on the hydrological processes of the Himalaya, climate change impacts on glaciers and rivers, and sustainable water resource management. His studies on the Himalayan basinsis frequently cited for their scientific depth and policy relevance.
Speaking on the occasion, Jeelani expressed deep gratitude to the President of India, the Ministry of Mines, his colleagues, and his students.
